How much does local SEO cost for a small business in Utah?

What local SEO costs a Utah small business by pricing model: monthly retainers, one-time audits, hourly rates, and DIY, with sourced ranges and our own price.

· · 6 min read

A small Utah business paying someone for local SEO should expect somewhere between $500 and $3,000 a month on a retainer, going by the published guides below, and far less if the work is a one-time fix. Doing the basics yourself costs nothing but time. Here is what each pricing model gets you, where the numbers come from, and when the cheap option is the right one.

The outside ranges come from published agency pricing pages and one industry survey, not a Utah-wide study. We couldn’t find one. Treat them as a sanity check on a quote, not a price list.

Monthly retainer

A retainer pays for ongoing work: keeping the Google Business Profile current, writing content aimed at what customers search, building citations, chasing reviews, and tracking where you rank. It is the model most agencies sell.

TechPros, a Utah agency, publishes the clearest local tiers. It lists $500 to $1,500 a month for “basic cleanup, very small local market, maintenance” and $1,500 to $3,000 for a “single-location local service business,” with competitive or multi-city work at $3,000 to $7,500 and up. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers in 2024 and found local SEO averaged $1,557 a month, with agencies at $1,819 and freelancers around $1,150. WebFX quotes $1,000 to $5,000 a month for SEO retainers in general, local and national together.

Those figures agree more than they differ. A single-location business in a normal category is usually quoted in the low thousands. TechPros reserves the top tier, $7,500 and up, for legal, medical, HVAC, roofing, and multi-location work.

One-time audit and cleanup

Plenty of local sites don’t need ongoing work. They need someone to fix them once. An audit and cleanup covers page speed, titles and headings, LocalBusiness schema, a proper page for each service, and a clean Business Profile. After that the site holds its ground in a quiet category without monthly help.

WebFX puts one-off SEO projects at $500 to $5,000. In the Ahrefs survey, $2,501 to $5,000 was the most common project fee, though that covers all kinds of projects, not just small local sites. A five-page site for a single shop is a smaller job than most of what those numbers describe.

Hourly or project work

Hourly SEO is for a scoped task: setting up Search Console and conversion tracking, fixing a redirect mess after a redesign, or writing schema for one page. Ahrefs found an average of $111 an hour, and $75 to $100 was the most common rate. WebFX lists $75 to $200 an hour for consulting.

It’s a poor fit for ongoing local SEO. Billing by the hour for work that never really ends gets expensive and hard to predict. It works well for one problem you already know you have.

Doing it yourself

The DIY route is free in dollars. Google states that creating a Business Profile and listing your business is free, and the profile is the biggest single lever for showing up in the map results. Fill out every field, pick the exact category, add real photos, keep the hours right, and ask happy customers for reviews. Then make sure your website names what you do and the towns you serve.

This is the right choice more often than agencies admit. If you’re a barber or a small contractor in a town with three competitors, and none of them has touched their profile, the free work may be all you ever need. Our guide on whether a Cache Valley business needs SEO at all has a 20-minute checkup for sizing that up. Pay someone when the free basics are done and you still sit below the competition, or when your time is worth more than the bill.

Where our price fits

Vient’s Managed SEO is $300 a month, added on top of any of our website plans. It covers keyword strategy and on-page work, AI answer optimization so ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers name your business, fresh content, a review of your Business Profile, and rank and AI-citation tracking with a monthly report. The full list is on our local SEO in Logan service page.

That puts it at the low end of every range above, and that’s on purpose. Our clients are small local businesses in markets like Cache Valley, not multi-city chains, so the work is sized to match. Even without the add-on, the $50-a-month Starter website plan includes basic on-page SEO and Google Business Profile guidance. A one-time audit and cleanup is quoted on its own, because the work depends entirely on the state of the site.

What drives the price

Whoever you hire, four things move the number:

  • Competition in your category. A personal injury lawyer and a mobile dog groomer are not buying the same service. The more businesses already investing in SEO for your terms, the more work it takes to pass them.
  • How many towns you target. One town needs one well-built page and one profile. Ten towns need ten real location pages, and that’s a content project on its own.
  • Where the site and profile start. A fast site with a claimed, filled-out profile needs upkeep. A slow site on a builder with no schema needs cleanup first, and cleanup costs money before anything else can.
  • AI answer optimization. Getting named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI answers takes structured data, direct answers on your pages, and consistent business info across the web. Some agencies price it as a separate line. Ours includes it in the monthly add-on.

What a Cache Valley business should actually spend

For most shops and service businesses in the valley, the honest order is: do the free basics yourself, fix the site once if it needs it, and only then pay monthly if you’re in a crowded category. Paying a big-city retainer for a town where your competitors haven’t claimed their profiles is overpaying.

If the website itself is the problem, our guide on what a website costs in Utah covers that side. Every plan and the SEO add-on are on the pricing page with no hidden fees. And if you’d rather have a straight number for your own business, send us the details and we’ll quote it, including telling you when the free route is enough.

Frequently asked questions

How much does local SEO cost per month in Utah?
Most published ranges for a small or single-location Utah business fall between $500 and $3,000 a month. TechPros, a Utah agency, lists $500 to $1,500 for a small local market and $1,500 to $3,000 for a single-location service business. Ahrefs' 2024 survey of 439 SEO providers found local SEO retainers averaged $1,557 a month. Our own Managed SEO add-on is $300 a month, which sits at the low end.
How much does a one-time SEO audit cost?
WebFX's pricing page puts one-off SEO projects at $500 to $5,000. In the Ahrefs survey, the most common project fee was $2,501 to $5,000. In our experience, a small local site with a handful of pages is a smaller job than most of what those ranges cover. At Vient, a one-time audit and cleanup is quoted on its own after we look at the site.
Can I do local SEO myself for free?
Yes, and for a lot of small businesses it is the right first step. Google says creating a Business Profile is free. Filling out every field, adding photos, and asking customers for reviews costs an afternoon plus a little upkeep each month. Paying someone makes more sense once you are in a crowded category or the free basics stop moving your rankings.
What is the average hourly rate for SEO?
The 2024 Ahrefs survey found an average of $111 an hour, with $75 to $100 the most common rate. WebFX lists $75 to $200 an hour for SEO consulting. Hourly work suits a small fixed job, like setting up tracking or fixing one technical problem, better than ongoing local SEO.
Does SEO cost less in a smaller market like Cache Valley?
It usually should, because the bill follows the work and the work follows the competition. We found no published Utah pricing broken out by city, so there is no hard number for the gap. The reasoning is simple, though: the fewer local competitors already investing in SEO for your terms, the less it takes to pass them. TechPros, a Utah agency, prices a very small local market in its lowest tier and competitive or multi-city work well above it.
